Selling your business:
The are two stages to selling a business. The first stage is preparing your business for sale - this could be up to 12 months in advance of the business actually going on the market. The second stage is the listing, marketing and negotiating the sale of the business.

Preparing your business for sale
You will need to take a good look at your business as if you were the buyer. Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. You will need help and guidance from your agent and accountant and need to prepare and implement a detailed plan of action to get the business ready for close examination by potential buyers.

Some key issues to address

  • Make sure your financial records have been kept accurately and in detail. Consider switching to a computerized accounts system, if you have not already done so.Be ready to explain any unusual figures

  • Make sure that all relevant documents relating to the business are up to date and accurate e.g leases, hire purchases agreements, client and supplier contracts, staff contracts, patents, tradements, franchise agreements etc.

  • Target your more obvious weak points and bring them up to par with the rest of your business.

  • Be honest with your staff let them know your intentions to sell, and that you'll do your best to ensure that they can continue with the new owners.

  • Prepare detailed information on your business, e.g day-to-day operations ,relevant industry information history of your business etc.
